Keezhthali Sree Mahadeva Temple

Thali village in Thalappilli Thaluk of Thrissur district has historical importance and is belived to be the headquarter of erstwhile King Cheraman Perumal. A naturally blessed village Thali is around 15 km north west of Wadakkancherry in Varavoor Panchayath and has its own traditional and historical importance. It was believed that there were 108 sivalayas in and around Thali built in the era of King Cheraman Perumal who was a staunch and ardent devotee of Lord Siva for his daily darsan. The fact that remenants of many Siva Temples are found scattered in and around Thali is a testimony to the above belief.
Keezhthali Sree Mahadeva Temple is situated on the top of a small hill. It is believed that earlier this area was a dense forest and the famous Bharathapuzha was flowing adjacent to it. As time passed by the Bharathapuzha changed its course to the north and the south part of the river is presently called “Arangottukara” which is just around 2 kms. away from the temple site. It is believed that a hermit having some supernatural power lived in this forest from time immemorial. The Prathishta of present Sivalinga is believed to have been performed by this hermit in the place where he felt the presence of cerain omnipotent power.
Thali village is surrounded by Kizhake Thali called Keezhthali Sree Mahadeva Templein the east Pinthali or Pindali a hill with a height of 300 mtrs. with the temple called Malabar Pazhani an abode of Lord Subramania in the west and Naduthali an equally important Siva Temple with cultural and historical importance with a view similar to that of Vadakkunathan Temple Thrissur in the centre. The remnants of the fort of King Cheraman Perumal is found adjacent to Naduthali temple in an hilly area called Thachakunnu with a beautiful scenary. Traditional belief gives an amazing wonder of information about existence of a vast pond called ‘Arakulam’ spread over around 100 acre land in thali village on the bank of which the 108 Sivalayas thrived with glory once upon a time. With the passage of time the ‘Arakulam’ has shrunk to a merely 10 to 15 acre width and the site is still worth seeing. It is believed that the hill at Pindali was formed when the soil from the digging of the above said pond called Arakulam was deposited there.
