Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple

Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple is a famous Lord Shiva temple located at Nilakkal in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India. The temple is an important halting place or idathavalam for the thousands of devotees visiting Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple. Located on the eastern side of Pattanamthitta, Nilakkal Shiva Temple is located amidst green forest and rubber plantations. Nilakkal Sree Mahadeva Temple is enshrined here in two forms - Ugramoorthy or fierce form and Mangalapradayakan or the blessing form. A beautiful Nandi can be seen in the temple. Devotees make it a point to break coconuts in front of the Kannimoola Ganapathi the main sub deity of the temple. Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple is situated about 15 KM east of Pampa is the oldest temple in this place. Nilakkal is predominantly a rural hilly area surrounded by Dense reserve forest and Rubber plantations. Even though the place is least populated, the beautiful landscape and serenity makes it enchanting.The holy river Pamba flows through the northern part of Nilakkal. During Sabarimala pilgrimage, lots of devotees visit the temple. And probably on these days Nilakkal is crowded by devotees. Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple which was founded in the year 1946 is located just 1 km from the main highway. It is believed that Lord Ayyappa on his way to forest to eradicate the demon got the blessings from his father Haran from Nilakkal Mahadeva Temple.
