Palan Pulayan Temple
The Palanpulayan temple, where savarna saw his servant as a deity at a time when the rituals were kept in his own uttariyathumbu, is awe-inspiring for the time and history. The temple, which is believed to have been established in the early 18th century, is located at Kanjeettukara in Ranni Ayiroor. There is no distinction of caste, religion or colour here. There is neither big nor small. Because of this, many people, irrespective of caste and creed, come here every day to achieve their purpose.
Pulayan means the lord of the pulam or the soil. Legend has it that Palan Pulayan is believed to have been the head farm worker of Chittedathu tharavadu. Palan's loyalty and master's love made Palan a favourite of those who were in Chittedam. One day he was working in the fields when he was attacked by a Leopard. Palan Pulayan was holding a Sickle in his hand. Pulayan and the Leopard had a duel for a sometime. Although Palan Pulayan was able to kill the Leopard, He succumbed to the injuries caused by the leopard. Palan Pulayan was cremated as per the Pulaya customs, However the Chittedathu tharavad people stated facing mishaps and diseases after the death of Palan Pulayan.
An astrologer was consulted who in turn advised them that, Palan Pulayan had an untimely death and if he was honoured properly, he would be pleased and no mishap would occur then on. Hence the family of Chittedathu tharavadu, commissioned a Temple with an idol made of wood.
The temple is still run by Chittedathu Family. The temple is open to people of all caste, colour and creed. Palan Pulayan is lovingly known as Palan Appooppan.
People visit the temple for getting a good harvest and to get the valuable things that they have lost.
