Parumala Valiya Panayannarkavu Devi Temple
It is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Sri Badrakali and Lord Shiva. The temple is situated on the banks of the Pampa River at Parumala. The Panaynararkavu Temple is one of the three most important Bhadrakali temples in Kerala. Thirumandhamkunnu Temple in Malabar, Kodungallur Temple in Cochin and Panayannarkavu Temple in Travancore are almost equally important.
Main deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. The temple is a part of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala; however governing power in day-to-day pujas. Chamundi, the ferocious aggressive deity out of seven deities, display the strongest as Kali in the temple. Women are not allowed to enter the temple premises during and after the ‘Valiya Guruthi’.
Panayannarkavu is one of Saptha matha (Seven Goddess) is the presiding power in Parumala Valiya Panayannarkavu Devi Temple. This is one of the temple in Kerala where Saptha Matha are worshiped. It is one of the few temples well-known for their Wall Paintings. It has not been easy to determine the antiquity of these paintings. Based on themes from the Devibhagawatam Ramayana and other epics, these painting appear to be of long vintage and are of exquisite beauty. It is believe that temple murals were completed in the period of the last king of the Odanad Royal House.
