Thrippara Mahadeva Temple

An 800-year-old famous Siva Temple located on the banks of the Achankovil River in Vallicode village.

The main sanctum sanctorum here is situated in the open directly above the temple ghats. This makes it a bit different from other temples in this area.

Legend has it that during the time of Pandavas exile, Arjuna one of the Pandavas and Lord Krishna, were passing through the forest, on a Pradosha day (a special day in Malayalam month). Both were quite exhausted that they decided to take rest on the banks of the Achankovil river and prepare some food. Before the meal, Arjuna asked Lord Sreekrishna to find a place for Siva pooja. Lord Krishna pointed Arjuna to his own foot and asked him to do his usual pooja ritual reflecting Lord Siva’s thoughts in his mind (Sankalp). Arjuna felt Lord Siva’s presence at the very moment. After this incident that place was known as Thiru Padam which later became Thrippara. Years went by this forest was covered with tall grass and rocks. One fine day a man was clearing the grass in the area. While sharpening his sickle on one of the rocks. The blade hit the rock and blood started oozing from the rock. The man informed the landlord of the area. A Devaprashna was conducted through which they were able to detect the divine presence of Lord Siva. That day on the villagers started performing poojas and a temple was established.
