Irunilamkode Cave Temple

Irunilamkode is a small village situated in the middle of Mullurkara Panchayath, about two kilometers from Mullurkara Railway station in Thrissur District, Kerala State. There is an ancient temple very close to the main road, which is under the protection of the archaeological department of the Kerala government. This temple is famous for all aspects. For thousands of years, this temple was unknown and unseen by the public. About 300 years ago, some villagers accidentally located it. The idol is carved on a rock at the bottom edge of a small hillock inside a cave. This hillock spreads over an area of more than 100 acres with solid rock.

The structure of the deity is very peculiar and rare, perhaps seen nowhere else. Lord Dakshinamurthy, the master of all masters, is sitting on a pedestal, with one leg mounted on the other, head a little lifted up, and body leaning towards the back, with a charming look at his devotees. All four hands are bearing traditional symbols. A shining silver crown on the head enhances the Lord's beauty in appearance. The idols of 'Vishnu,' 'Sivalinga,' and Devi are also sculptured in the same shrine.

This temple is renowned for religious harmony. Regardless of caste or creed, people can enter the temple and perform worship themselves. They are free to touch the lord's feet.
