Alathiyoor Sri Hanuman Swamy Temple

Situated in the small village of Alathiyoor of Malappuram district, Althiyoor Hanuman Temple is one of the most celebrated Hanuman temples in Malappuram. Sri Hanuman of Alathiyoor is a Darling - Guardian of children.

Even though the main deity of the temple is Hindu god Rama the temple is famous and known as a "Hanuman temple". The shrine of Hanuman is located to the south of Rama temple. The temple of Sri Hanuman is adjacent to the main Temple of Sree Rama. Sree Hanuman has his head tilted to left, to hear his master’s words. Sree Rama is confiding in Hanuman the cue-word (Abhignana Vaakyam) that would enable him to gain the confidence of Sita. Hanuman has a mace in his hand. As the situation in Ramayana, Lakshmana is away from Rama and Hanuman so that he can't be hearing the cue-word. It is believed that Hanuman worshipping here is getting ready to go to Lanka in search of Mata Sita. This is the reason why there is no murti or worship of Sita in the temple.

There is platform to commemorate Sri Hanuman’s mighty leap to Lanka over the sea. There is a long granite stone at one end of the platform and symbolize the sea. Devotees come running and leap over the long stone. By doing this, auspicious result is expected especially for the better health and life of children.

It is believed that Alathiyoor Perumthikovil (Hanuman Kavu) temple was erected and consecrated by Sage Vasishta, who is prominent among the Saptarshis, some 3000 years ago. Long ago the Alathiyoorr grama nambodiri came into the possession of this temple. Afterwards it was taken over by Vettath Raja. A little later the Zamorin Raja of Kozhikkode took over the management of this temple. Presently the temple continues to be administered by his highness Zamorin Raja of Kozhikkode.
