Madiyankulam Durga Temple

Madiyankulam Durga Temple is situated at Ajanur, about 5 km from Kanhangad. It is a highly revered temple dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The temple is known for its centuries-old wooden carvings and its epic poems. The poems portray the unity of different religions and castes.

The most noteworthy fact of the temple is that the Brahmin priest performs puja only in the noon. The morning and evening pujas are performed by a caste division called Maniyanis. It is also famous for a temple that had an entry for lower caste people even before the Temple Entry Proclamation in Kerala.

The temple is famed for its Bhutha dance (Bootham) performed in connection with the annual festivals in May/June and December/January. Devotees and pilgrims from different regions visit this temple during festival seasons in order to watch this unique temple-art. The temple gopuram (ceiling) has Ramayana carved in wood, which is known as Darushilpam form of art.
