Mavelikara Puthiyakavu Devi Temple
Puthiyakavu Devi Temple is a Shakti temple located in Puthiyakavu, Old Mavelikkara. The main deity of the temple is Sree Bhadrakali. The temple is a small shrine with a Nalambalam (small temples for sub-deities), Chathura (square) Sreekovil, a temple pond, and a Namaskara Mandapam. The temple also has shrines of Upa Devatas (sub-deities), such as Lord Krishna in the south, Devi Bhuvaneshwari in the northwest, and Yakshiyamma and Sarpam (serpent gods) in the northeast. Around the sanctum sanctorum, one can see beautiful architectural sculptures.
In 1811, the Govt. of Travancore took control of Sree Krishna temple, which belonged to the Edassery family. In return, the family was offered the Puthiyakavu temple, which later came under the rule of the NSS in 1957. Sreekrishna Swamy Temple is 1.12 km from Puthiyakavu Devi Temple.
The annual festival of the temple is held in Meena Masam (March-April) and coincides with the Meena Bharani day. The main attraction of the festival is Kettukazhcha (the display of huge, decorated forms of temple cars known as 'Kuthiras - Chariots'), caparisoned elephants, melam, Shakti temple rituals/pujas, and ezhunnallathu, which are part of the annual festival. The annual festival also consists of Nedum Kuthira, Jeevitha Ezhunnallathu, and Parayeduppu.
