Sree Mannampurathu Kavu Bhagavathy Temple

Mannampurathu Kavu Bhagavathy temple otherwise known as Chathayamangalam temple is situated in Nileshwaram. The temple is well renowned for "Shakthi Pooja" tradition in Kasaragod district. The shrine is dedicated to a powerful form of Goddess Bhagavathi and the temple is also famous for its Theyyam festival.

Legend has it that Mannam Purathu Kavu Bhagavathy arrived in the place to defeat Mannan, a cruel ruler. As the Bagavathi pooja necessitated the killing of hen etc. created a confusion in the minds of the nairs of the area. So they invited Pidarers [non-vegitarian priests] for ritualistic activities.

It is in the midst of a Kavu (Sacred Grove) where there are huge trees and creepers. The Grove is approximately 6 Acres and it is a protected Bio Reserve.

The Theyyams performed in the temple are Mannam Purathu Kavilamma, Nadayil Bhagavathy and Kshetrapalakan. The theyyam ritual is held in the May month or early June after Kalasam of Madiyan Koolom. Manampurathu kalasham ends the theyyam season in north Malabar region.

Festivals

The annual pratishta festival in the temple is held in Malayalam month of Medam (April - May).


Main Offerings

Hen Guruzi - One of the few temples where cooked chicken is given as a prasadam for a vazhipad (Offering). It is a dish prepared with chicken & pepper mixed with green gram.
