Sree Ramaswami Temple

The Sree Rama temple is situated at Ramapuram, between Malappuram and Perinthalmanna in Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and is around a 1000-year-old. The place is named after the temple.

Legend has it that the idol worshipped in the temple is the salagrama murti of Sree Rama. During the period Vadakkedathu Mana and Thekkedathu Mana were the prominent Nampoothiri families of the locality. The Salagrama Murti was brought to Vadakkedathu Mana by a brahmin to perform his evening rites during the course of his pilgrimage. When he reached the house the male members of the family had gone out to attend the festival of a nearby temple. So, he asked the female members of the mana to take care of the idol while he set out for his evening rituals. One of the young female member of the family got mesmerised by the Auspicious Salagrama Murthi and became devoted to the deity. She prepared Palpayasam and offered it to the deity. The Murti was very much pleased and wished to be there. The brahmin returned after performing the rites and when he was about to take the idol to proceed his journey, he heard an Asiriri (Divine Voice) that the deity wished to stay there. Accordingly, a temple was built at this place and dedicated to Lord Sree Rama. Subsequently temples were built for Bharatha, Lakshmana and Sathrugna in the nearby places. The temples were under the management of Vadakkedathu Mana and Thekkedathu Mana until the temple was taken over by the Malabar Devaswam Board.

The temple is part of the Nalambalam Darshan. The four (Nalambalams) temples in Malappuram are located in a radius of 2 km on the Perinthalmanna – Malappuram Road. However, the other 3 temples were destroyed by Tipu's Invading forces. Efforts are being made to rebuild the 3 temples, with Laksnmana Temple fully completed and the other two partially completed.
