Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva Temple

Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple is Located in Krishnapuram, near Kayamkulam. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This sacred Hindu worship place is considered among the rarest worship places on the earth. The main deity of the temple Lord Shiva or Mahadeva is worshiped here as Vethala. The temple is only 3 km distance from renowned Oachira Parabrahma Temple

Local history states that Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple was constructed during the 14th century by a local ruler. A sage called Balamukhi visited the area and did penance to Lord Shiva with high devotion for attaining salvation. Lord Shiva is known for granting incredible boons. Finally, pleased by his sincerity, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him the boon of ultimate salvation. Another popular legend regarding the origin of this sacred temple. It is said that a local ruler called Veerbhadra Swamy who was also an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva suffered from some mysterious physical problems. His spiritual advisors suggested him to build a Shiva temple. According to the advice, the King constructed the Mahadeva temple. To his astonishment, he was cured completely.

The temple has one basement. However, it is said that no one can reach down to the mysterious basement as it is guarded by snakes. Local inhabitants claim that basement in the temple has an incredible treasure. Only the main priest of the temple is able to access to the basement of the temple. The exterior portion of the temple resembles the older style of architecture, a commonly followed style of the South India. The central area of the temple comprises the sacred idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvathi.

The temple is maintained by the Archeological Survey of India.
